(although technically it was past midnight, so I guess you could count it as today) Just to clarify a few things: Yes, I read Imzadi awhile ago. No, I wasn't trying to rip it off. No, I do NOT take credit for the plot. Yes, parts of it are like the book (I did page through it after several people pointed out the similarities) but most parts are from someone else's plot suggestion. It's NOT my plot either way! I don't want anybody to think it was. I wrote it because I was bored and I posted it for the same reason I post everything: Someone might enjoy it. Hope that clears it up.*** (But I do take credit for this plot, although I wish I could say it was based on someone else's experience) I wrote this story while waiting for someone to call me. I was staring at the telephone, willing it to ring, and I thought "how pathetic is this"? So I wrote this to pass the time. The truly pathetic part is that I was so glad when they called two hours later, I forgave them and went with them. Oh, well. "Pathetic" by Yorgi Dana Scully couldn't stand it any longer. She had to call Tony. He had promised to call her on his lunch break, but it was 1:00, and Dana was going nuts. Dana had met Tony three weeks ago. It had taken awhile for her to accept that her partner, Fox Mulder would never love her the way she loved him, but she finally felt ready to date someone else. Oh, it had been hard at first. Especially since Mulder didn't seem to care at all. But he was clearly labled NOT AVAILABLE. Honestly, Dana didn't think that Tony was the one for her. But she had gotten so sick of being alone. . . Miraculously, as Dana reached for the phone, it rang. She picked it up so fast the base was knocked off of the desk. Dana saw Mulder look up, but she didn't care. "Hello?" "Dana?" "Tony!" "Listen Dana I don't have much time to talk." "Oh, okay." Dana tried to keep the disappointment out of her voice. "But I'll make it up to you tonight." "Tonight?" "I want to take you out to dinner, a movie and anything else you want to do." "Really?" Dana said happily. "That would be fantastic." "I should be home around five thirty. I'll give you a call as soon as I get home, then I'll come pick you up." "I'll be waiting." "See you later." "Bye." Dana smiled and hung up the phone. * * * Dana was ready at 5:15. She had left work early so that she would have plenty of time to change and fix her hair and make-up just right. Dana knew Mulder was annoyed with her sudden desire to have a social life, and she was kind of enjoying it. He had looked at her oddly when she had dashed out of the office at four o'clock, but he hadn't said anything. At 5:45, Tony still hadn't called. Dana knew that there were a million possible explanations for him being late, but she was growing restless. After waiting fifteen more minutes, Dana picked up a book. After reading it cover to cover, she decided that she had had enough. It was seven o'clock, and even though it went against all of "The Rules", Dana was going to call him. There was no answer at Tony's office. The phone rang 8 times before Dana hung up. Dana collapsed on her couch. "How pathetic am I?" she asked herself. "I'm waiting by the phone for a man to call. Am I really that desperate?" The phone rang. Dana leaped from the couch and knocked the base off of the table as she snatched the receiver. "Hello?" she said breathlessly. "Hey, Scully, it's me." It was Mulder. "Oh, hi, Mulder." "Don't sound too thrilled to talk to me." "I'm sorry, Mulder. I was just expecting a call from someone else." "Ohhh." From his tone, Dana guessed that he knew who 'someone' was. "Well, I don't want to tie up your line. . ." "No, it's alright. I don't want to talk to him anyway." "Oh. Uh, how was dinner?" he asked carefully. "We didn't go to dinner," Dana replied bitterly. "He never called me. And I was stupid enough to wait by the phone all night." Mulder was silent, but Dana knew he was probably glad. "Mulder?" she said in a small voice. "Do you ever wish you had. . . you know, a life?" He considered her question. "Sometimes. But with the X-Files and all the traveling we do, there's hardly any time for anybody else. So I spend my weekends working," he said finally. "But doesn't it get lonely?" "Yeah." She almost didn't hear him. "I mean, before it was okay because I had you, but now. . ." he trailed off. "What do you mean? I'm here for you." "I know you are, but you've got Tony now," he sighed. "And I'm really happy for you and everything," he said quickly, "but sometimes I get a little bit. . . I mean, you're never home. . . when you're always with him." Dana gasped. "I. . . I'm sorry, Mulder." "No, no, it's okay," he rushed to reassure her. "I want you to be happy." "But I'm not happy with him!" Ooops. That was more than she had wanted to say. "Scully. . ." "I just wanted to have a life. I was sick of having nowhere to go Friday nights," she admitted. "You could come over here." Dana froze. Was that an invitation? "Tonight?" "Anytime you want." "Okay. . . I'll be over in fifteen minutes." "Alright. I'll see you then." After she hung up, Dana went back into her bedroom and changed into casual clothes. On her way out the door, the phone rang. Dana glanced at her Caller ID. It was Tony. She let the machine get it. THE END Comments to: VondaRain@aol.com
