Disclaimer: You guys know this. I know this. Heck, *they* know it. So what's the point of writing it? Mulder, Scully, and Mrs. Scully belong to CC and Company, 1013 Productions, and Fox. This is a sadder story. It's not MSR (sorry, guys). Reunion at the Funeral Mulder parked his car and headed for the church. Mulder would be glad to see Scully, even under these circumstances. It was her mother's funeral. She had battled a long illness, and now her final peace had come. Scully had taken a leave of absence months before so she could be with her mother. Mulder rarely saw her. Mulder entered the building, glancing at the stained glass windows. The service began, and Mulder saw Scully in the front pew with her family. After the service, people began filing out. Mulder stayed where he was, hoping to get a chance to talk to Scully. He saw her standing in the front of the church, in front of her mother's casket. She looked tired and, somehow, defeated. Mulder walked up to her. "Scully," he said, and she turned around at the familiar voice. "Mulder." He opened his arms, and they embraced. "Let's go outside," said Scully. She didn't want to be in that church any longer. They walked outside, and into a park that was nearby. The park was silent, except for the chirping of birds. "Don't you love birds? Mom did. Especially in her last few months. Sometimes, we would go outside of the house, and I would wheel her here. Just to hear the birds." Scully's voice was devoid of emotion. Mulder listened "Why did she have to die?" Scully asked. She didn't seem angry. "I spent months giving her the best care possible, and she goes and dies on me." "It's not your fault. You knew she was very sick, Scully," said Mulder. "Yes, and I've had a year to prepare for her death." "Nothing prepares you for the death of a loved one," said Mulder, thinking of his own experiences. They were silent for a moment. "I just wonder, what will I do now? " "The X-Files is always open to you, Scully," he said. "Thanks, Mulder," said Scully, and they walked on. ****************************************************************************** ***************
